Alaskan Qiviut Handknits

Oomingmak is the Alaskan co-operative that has brought exquisite Qiviut items to you as a unique northern gift since 1969. It is owned by approximately 250 Native Alaskan women from remote coastal villages of Alaska who knit each item by hand. Each village has a signature pattern derived from traditional aspects of village life and the Eskimo culture; they may come from an ancient artifact or a beadwork design.

Qiviut (pronounced "kiv-ee-ute"), the downy-soft underwool from the Arctic musk ox, is shed naturally each year during the spring months. Eight times warmer than wool and extraordinarily lightweight, Qiviut is one of the finest natural fibers known to man.

All of our items are 100% Qiviut and in the natural color. The caps and scarves made by the knitters are as comfortable to wear on cool days in a warm climate as they are in chilly weather. Unlike wool, Qiviut is not scratchy and will not shrink in any temperature of water. It can be hand-washed in any mild detergent and will last for many years.

As Anchorage enters phase 3 of reopening, we are updating our in store protocols.

-We are going to be open to the public for walk in business Monday - Friday 10am to 6pm.

-We do ask that you have a mask ON when entering the store, and to use the hand sanitizer available on the counter before touching qiviut.

-We are still offering FREE S/H on all USA orders @*

-For the comfort of our customers we are still offering curbside pickup, and or online purchase with in store pick up.

-While not necessary a quick call to 272-9225 before you come down to the co-op is appreciated due to limited staff

Hopefully we will get past this sooner rather than later.

Any garments tried on in store are placed in quarantine for a week.  The best science says Covid-19 dies on surfaces in roughly 24 hours.

All returns and exchanges at this time will be charged $25 washing and blocking fee.

*Free shipping and handeling will shop up on your order, it is deducted at the time of processing.  For International, because of cost, we cannot give Free S/H.  We will however split the cost with you, we will apply $20 to your s/h cost.  You will pay any amount over that.  So for example, mailing a package of yarn to Canada in our own packaging cost $44.  So we would deduct the $20 credit from the $44, so you pay $24.   I hope that&##39;s clear, if not feel free to call us.
